Packing & Shipping Nuts: A Guide for Wholesale Buyers

Packing & Shipping Nuts: A Guide for Wholesale Buyers

A shipment of cashews can be perfectly graded and fully aflatoxin-compliant at the point of despatch and still arrive in poor condition. The difference is logistics. How nuts are packed, loaded and documented decides whether the quality measured in Tanzania is the quality a buyer receives weeks later at the destination port.

Packaging that protects the kernel

Cashew kernels are sensitive to moisture, oxygen and physical handling. The trade standard is vacuum-packed tins or flexi-pouches, often flushed with an inert gas, holding 10 kilograms net inside a carton. This protects flavour, slows rancidity and limits breakage of whole grades in transit. Raw cashew nuts, more robust, ship in woven polypropylene bags of around 80 kilograms.

Containers and conditions

Most kernel shipments move in standard 20-foot containers, which suit the weight and value of the cargo. The real risks in transit are heat and condensation. We line containers with kraft paper, fit desiccant where a route demands it, and load so cartons are stable and ventilated. The aim is to hold the kernel through a tropical departure and a cooler arrival without moisture forming inside.

Quality is not just made at the factory. It is preserved — or lost — in the container. A careful load is the last quality-control step before the buyer sees the goods.

Documentation a buyer should expect

  • Commercial invoice and a detailed packing list with lot numbers.
  • Certificate of origin and the relevant phytosanitary certificate.
  • Aflatoxin and quality test reports tied to the shipped lots.
  • Bill of lading and full container loading details.
  • ISO 22000 or HACCP certification references for the processing facility.

For a wholesale buyer, two habits make the biggest difference. Agree the packaging format and net weights in the contract rather than assuming them, and confirm the documentation set early so customs clearance is never the delay. Done well, logistics is invisible — the nuts simply arrive in spec, on time, and ready for the buyer's own line.
